The Log Canoe Inn: A Luxury Stay in Historic St. Michaels
As you near the end of Carpenter Street, and the sunshine peaks through the locust trees, you can start to see the light reflecting off the dancing water.
Opening to an expansive front lawn, under the Locust trees, sits the Log Canoe Inn.
For over two hundred years, the inn has sat on the St. Michaels Harbor, watching the changes of the town. Originally a watermen’s cottage in the early 1800’s, living on the water was not considered a luxury. The harbor filled each day with workboats bringing in their catch of the day, ships bringing the latest supplies, and rowdy sailors looking for the closest pub. The harbor back then was busy – and far from comfortable. Fast forward to today, the inn operates as a luxury property, where historic charm and ambiance meets modern amenities and comforts. However, the time between these two contrasting uses has been a journey. Serving many purposes, the inn was primarily used as a private residence up until the 1920’s, when it served as the first location of the Miles River Yacht Club. Once the yacht club moved to their permanent location a few years later, the inn later became one of the first boarding houses in St. Michaels – and so began the era of hospitality.
Entering into the main house, you are greeted with a newly renovated interior, where no space was left untouched. Walking into the main sitting room, light fills the space and accentuates the theme of gold – the color of winning. Named in honor of the historic Chesapeake Bay sailing log canoes, regatta racing is at the forefront of our history. Thoughtfully curated details throughout the inn bring the history of our town and the sailing log canoes to focus.
