Log Canoes

What is a Chesapeake Bay log canoe?

A Chesapeake Bay log canoe is a traditional wooden sailing vessel originally made by joining several shaped logs to form the hull. The boats began as working craft used by local watermen and later developed into racing vessels.

Do historic Chesapeake Bay log canoes still race?

Yes, the log canoes continue to race as they have for over a hundred years. The racing season runs from June through September, with four race weekends held in St. Michaels on the Miles River.

Where can visitors see log canoe races in St. Michaels?

The best way to see the log canoe races is out on the water. Several charter boats are available, and are listed on our Things To Do page.

Why are log canoes difficult to sail?

Their narrow hulls and unusually large sail plans make them fast but unstable. Crew members use long springboards and their own body weight to help keep the boats upright.
